International Women’s Day – Accelerating action for gender equality

On 8th March 2025, the Zonta Club of Accra Metropolitan (ZCAM) collaborated with the International Child Development Programme (ICDP) Ghana, Ghana Health Service, Camfed, Deeprock, and Ultrasound Consultant International LLC (USA) to celebrate International Women’s Day under the SafeStart Project, an initiative aimed at promoting maternal health in communities.

The SafeStart Project was selected to spotlight the critical roles women play in community-led development programmes. The initiative seeks to bridge gaps in maternal health and reduce maternal mortality by providing mobile ultrasonography services to pregnant women and engaging the broader public—especially women—in early warning alerts, early detection, and the timely management of maternal complications.

Speaking at the event, the President of ZCAM, Zontian Dorothy Tackie, stated, “Women play important roles in development, and their achievements must be celebrated.”

She further outlined key factors contributing to maternal mortality, including poor hygiene, limited access to quality healthcare facilities, infections, nutritional imbalances, and socioeconomic conditions such as poverty, inadequate education, and gender inequality. She emphasised that these issues must be urgently addressed to improve maternal health outcomes.

The celebration concluded with a very lively mentorship and career discussion session led by ZCAM representatives. Many of the young girls participating in the program had the opportunity to freely express their thoughts on pressing issues affecting their development and growth. This session gave them the ability to voice out determined opinions that will impact their lives in the future.
