Establishment

This international service organization was formed over 100 years ago in Buffalo, New York. Zonta Club of Accra Metropolitan grew out of the desire to see young professional women come together to work towards advancing the status of women. Individuals from various professional areas were invited by Zontians in other Clubs to join Zonta. Following a series of orientations and mentoring by existing Zonta Clubs in Ghana, the idea to form a new Club began. Members attended various orientation meetings to acquaint themselves with the Zonta Bye-Laws, history, and other interesting projects that Zonta Clubs in Ghana had been involved in. It was indeed exciting times when seasoned Zontians, Barbara Baeta, Miranda Green Street, Alberta Quartey, and Vicky Adomakoh always made themselves available to share their invaluable experiences.

An idea crystalized into the formation of the fourth Club in Ghana, Zonta Club of Accra Metropolitan (No. 1817) which was chartered on 30th September 2006 with 17 members on roll. The Charter Ball took place at the Cresta Royale Hotel, Accra during an impressive ceremony. The District Governor at the time, Z. Princess Odedina from Nigeria performed the ceremony. All members of Zonta Clubs in Ghana were in attendance.

Several meetings were held prior to the formal ceremony which took place at the Fiesta Royale Hotel in Accra. The first meeting proved to be an exciting one where the Past Presidents of Accra II, and sponsors of the Club were in attendance. They were Z. Stella Bentsi-Enchill (District Governor Dist. 18 (2010-2012) Z. Anne Marie French Cudjoe (Vice Area Director, 2010-2012), and Z. Norkor Duah (Area Director, 2010-2012).
